The project involved redesigning technical source material on logging and the ELK Stack into a structured Instructor-Led Training storyboard.

The original content contained the required subject-matter information, but it was organised primarily as technical reference material. The design task was to convert it into a learning experience that an instructor could confidently facilitate and that learners could follow without being overwhelmed.

The Instructional Challenge

The content introduced several connected concepts, including logging, centralised log management, monitoring, troubleshooting, and the different components of the ELK Stack.

Presenting these concepts as definitions or tool descriptions would not be enough. Learners needed to understand:

  • Why logging matters
  • How the concepts connect
  • Where each component fits
  • How the system supports real operational decisions
  • How to apply the learning during monitoring and troubleshooting

The storyboard also needed to support facilitators with more than slide text.

My Design Approach

How the Storyboard Came Together

  1. Analysed the source material
    Identified essential concepts, dependencies, technical terminology, and information requiring clarification.
  2. Created the instructional sequence
    Organised the content from foundational understanding to connected system application.
  3. Developed the slide architecture
    Assigned one clear instructional purpose to each slide and aligned the content with the learning objectives.
  4. Wrote facilitator guidance
    Developed spoken narration, examples, questions, transitions, timing, and emphasis cues.
  5. Added visual and engagement treatments
    Recommended system diagrams, log-flow visuals, monitoring examples, and learner discussion points.
  6. Reviewed the complete experience
    Checked technical accuracy, progression, cognitive load, pacing, and alignment between narration and visuals.

Reflection

Technical learning becomes easier to follow when the instructional structure reveals how individual concepts work together.

The value of this project was not simply presenting information about logging or the ELK Stack. It was designing a guided pathway that helped learners build understanding while giving the facilitator everything required to deliver that pathway effectively.
